How to paint a rock with shading ?
Here's a detailed tutorial for painting a beautiful young girl and her owl. It was created by Cindy Hayes.
Step-by-step
Grid pattern
To help you, you can grid your model with rectangles of varying sizes. Reproducing this grid on your rock will make it easier to keep the proportions right.
There are some great mobile apps for this (Drawing grid for example).
Once you have made your sketch, you can :
- Erasing the grid
- Paint the skin (Faber-Castell felt-tip pens)
- Paint the girl's eye and the owl's head (white Posca)
The eyes
Here are the main steps and materials used :
- The iris in blue (blue posca)
- Pupil in black (black posca)
- Eye contour (plain felt-tip pin extra fine brush black)
- Eyelid and eyebrows with a beige felt-tip pen, then add slightly darker hairs to the eyebrows with a brown felt-tip pen.
- Eyelashes with a very fine brush (special nail art brush)
The mouth
Here are the main steps and materials used:
- The inside of the mouth (Faber-Castell felt-tip pens or red posca)
- The contour of the mouth with a very fine brush (special nail art brush)
- The pink highlight on the lip. We recommend moistening the brush, then wiping it dry before applying the paint directly onto a large pink felt-tip pen.
The hair
Here are the main steps and materials used :
- Make a light-brown base for the hair, then add dark-brown highlights. As for the lifts, apply black ink, then light and dark brown for the highlights, using a very fine brush
- Finish with a little orange for highlights
Clothes
- For the hat, use beige and brown shades and create a blurred effect with a damp fan brush.
- For the clothes, use a light blue, then a darker blue for shading with a wet brush.
- Finish with a very fine Posca to refine the shading.
